I've notice a lot of people when they have been talking about the intimacy problem with the ship who sang and not being able to touch is a huge issue they seem to keep bringing up old people and sex. I've noticed people saying "some do" or such like that. Old people do have sex. I know ha ha very funny or ew gross but it's a fact. I know some may have anophobia or a fear of old people and do not want to think about grandma age people having sex or being sexual but why can't they be? Alot of comedy movies lately have been making a joke out of older women having sex and I really do not see the humor in it. Also the media's always emphasizes how important it is to be young and vibrant and how you should hide your age by dying your hair or using wrinkle creams. I know that people have a problem with old men too but there is so much pressure on older women and so much judgement. Post metopause women are treated like they have a disease and are treated with HRT. I honestly see menopause as sort of another right of passage like menarch is. I know this is a little off topic from the readings but I just thought I should point it out and another class I am in has been discussing woman and aging so it just sort of sparked up.
Going back to the readings the ending really sort of confused me. Pallon seems like such a jackass and all the things he says to her like calling her a metal plated retard (or w.e. he says) just makes me so mad. The relationship does not seem healthy to me. He is obsessed with her in a creepy, crazy way. When someone is obsessed with another they ususally end up becoming abusive in different ways and since he obviously can't hit her cause she is a ship (and that would really only hurt him) he does it verbally. I really want to read The Partner Ship to see how this relationship works out.
yeah i definitely agree old people do have sex as well, and quite frankly i don't think anyoen shoudl be frightene4d by it. I mean its a natural part of life and a sign of intimacy, although definitely not the only sign of intimacy and when you think about it on a grand scale its not the biggest part of intimacy. People can have sex with strangers does that neccessarilly mean their being intimate with them. I think not, but that knowing and understanding of each other or telling your greatest fears to soemone or just holding them when they have had a bad day, that's a larger sign of intimacy than sex. i would say intimacy is one of those words that has taklen ona different meaning thanks to the media, or especially parents who are talking about sexual situations in front children tend to use the word "intimacy" to sort of safe guard theior children from hear the word sex which has become a dirty word, but intimacy can basically mean anything and should not be immediately tied to sex.
ReplyDeleteAs for Pallon seeming like a total jackass, i suspect he most likely is, either he thinks he's funny or he is trying to flirt with helva in a way that 7 year old boys do, either way he is just kind of an immature jerk. That being said however there are alot of immature jerks who do thingas like that to their girlfriends and a lot of immature girls who do that to boys, though i would definitely say that teds to be a more male trait. I would say both Helva and Pallon are strangely infatuated with the other basically because they live in two worlds the other really can't hope to know. I think the only reason for helva having any attraction to him outside of that is that he is a constant and perhaps she is just developing and has yet to find another interest.
Yes our elders do still have sex. The truth is though in situations where the couple is not capable of performing sexually anylonger the couple doesnt just fall out of love or love each other less because they can't be intimate. I think in Helvas arguement she could easily have strong love without being able to be physically stimulated so to speak!! Realistic love is not built on sex and touching alone.
ReplyDeleteI really did not appreciate the fact that Pallon actually had the balls to say he loved Helva. Hello this guy needs to get some therapy and learn how to communicate using nice words. I was really just irritated with that whole situation and if I were Helva I would have saved all the nasty comments and names he called over the years on a tape and played it back to him explaining that those words are not at all the way anyone should show love. Maybe he was in denial but seriously Pallon has issues
My thinking is that Helva likes that he's "real" with her and doesn't edit himself to be polite, official etc.
